Made it through surgery! (Right rear leg – 5 1/2 hours!) Waking up and doing fine so far.

Roger and I have adopted many furbabies in our 35 years of marriage. Baby is a 6 yr. old 155lb English Mastiff who came to us when she was 1 1/2 yrs old along with her 'brother' Toby (a Landseer Newfoundland). We adopted them from Gentle Giants rescue and they are, indeed, both Gentle Giants. Baby was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2012. She just had her surgery on January 27th, 2012 to remove her right rear leg. She is recovering beautifully we are thrilled to have her with us!

We adopted Baby from Gentle Giants Rescue when she was 1 1/2 years old. Her original family moved away and she ended up at the rescue. She was a shy little girl at first, but now she’s outgoing and happy. What joy she has brought to our family! Our two year old Grandson absolutely loves her. He runs right past us saying ‘Baby Baby Baby’, then falls on her with hugs and kisses. Our other dog (Toby, the Landseer Newfoundland considers Baby his sister. They do everything together. Baby was diagnosed with bone cancer last week. We had to move quickly and we’re still a bit in shock. We went to a specialist who wanted to do a lot with lots of testing, kimo, etc. for around $12,000. We just can’t do that and we don’t really want to put her through it. So we opted to go with just the amputation in the hopes we’ve caught it in time. I appreciate all your good thoughts! – Judy
Welcome to tripawds. Sorry you are dealing with cancer, but you have found a very supportive community here. As for chemo- it is a personal decision, some chose it, some chose not to. The right answer is what works for you and Baby.
You might consider coming to the forums and sharing your story there. Also if you have any questions. More people hang out in the forums so you would get more input if you need it. We have several giant breed dogs here, one of my local pals is Cemil the Anatolian Shepard. He is a 150 lb front amp dog, just turned 6. He is 3 YEARS past his amp for OSA, and did not have chemo!

Sending you lots of positive wishes for a successful outcome on Baby’s surgery. In the meantime, you might want to reach out to folks here about alternative treatment therapies, such as herbs and supplements. I know several of the folks have opted not to do chemo but have had success with different supplements.
