Baby needs a more comfortable e-collar. Suggestions?

We’re using the collar she came home with at night.  We don’t need it while we’re watching her.  I would like to find a more comfortable option.  Hoping you all have suggestions for me.

Thanks,

Judy

Roger and I have adopted many furbabies in our 35 years of marriage. Baby is a 6 yr. old 155lb English Mastiff who came to us when she was 1 1/2 yrs old along with her 'brother' Toby (a Landseer Newfoundland). We adopted them from Gentle Giants rescue and they are, indeed, both Gentle Giants. Baby was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2012. She just had her surgery on January 27th, 2012 to remove her right rear leg. She is recovering beautifully we are thrilled to have her with us!

  1. Judy,
I don’t konw if it will work for Baby or if there is one large enough, but at Petsmart they have a collar that looks like one of those airline neck pillows. I am not sure but it might be sold through the Tripawds site also. Last time we were there Boomer was eyeing it like it mikght be more comfortable than the traditional e collars.
Just a thought and good luck on your search for a more comfy and better solution.

  2. Are you talking about the cone collars for keeping them from messing with their wounds? They have soft blow up ones, or my favorite idea’s are the cloth ones that look like a seat cushion from the toilet. You can find those at petco, or petsmart.

  3. we had no luck with the plastic cone of shame either. being ‘front amp’ed’, we were able to put a t-shirt on gayle and keep her from messing with the stitches. many folks have used boy sized boxer shorts (tail through the fly) on rear amp pups to cover the sutures and keep them from licking back there. if you go to the forums and search on cone of shame, there are many pictures of other options. some are like inflated donuts, but i don’t know how well they work. good luck – hard to keep them from messing with the incision when you can’t be there 24/7…but this too will pass..

  4. In the past we have used the inflatable collars from ProCollar. With fairly good success. We have had to return a few for leaks but when they don’t leak they are a good alternative. That said, it does depend on a couple of things–where the area you are trying to protect is and how long the dog’s nose is! I think since you would need an extra large for Baby it might work well for her, even though she is a rear amp.
I think we now have a Kong Cloud collar, which is basically identical to the ProCollar. We got an extra large (it was all they had) for Austin (a GSD) and the extra width of the collar helps to prevent a long-nosed dog from getting anywhere.
I just did a search for inflatable e-collar and both of these came up.
Both brands are currently on sale at Amazon–you can shop there through Tripawds and they will get a cut! There is a “Store” drop down button on the home page and if you click on that and then the amazon link it will take you to the Tripawds Amazon page–you can then click on a link that will take you to Amazon. Sorry, I sound like an Amazon ad! I try not to shop there but if I have to I start all my searches with Tripawds so get the kickback!

Good luck and I hope Baby is doing well today!

  5. We actually have friends staying with her while we’re at work. Thank God for caring humans! The only time we need the collar is at night. We haven’t figured out how to watch her while we’re sleeping ; ) . I think we’ll try the inflatable tube. I’ll let you know how it works.
