Stopping pain meds

Baby’s been on pain meds the whole two weeks.  I want to take her off, but my problem is that she never shows pain.  No whimpers, no complaints…ever!  How can I know when  it’s OK to take her off?

Roger and I have adopted many furbabies in our 35 years of marriage. Baby is a 6 yr. old 155lb English Mastiff who came to us when she was 1 1/2 yrs old along with her 'brother' Toby (a Landseer Newfoundland). We adopted them from Gentle Giants rescue and they are, indeed, both Gentle Giants. Baby was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2012. She just had her surgery on January 27th, 2012 to remove her right rear leg. She is recovering beautifully we are thrilled to have her with us!

  1. Who knows, maybe Baby is comfortable because of her wonderful Mom that helps her. Boomer has been weaning off his meds. I noticed after 12 hours he gets a little uneasy. Sometimes he looks where his leg used to be and then sometimes he pants. It took me a bit but I believe these are all ways he is telling me he is uncomfortable.
Our vet said to reduce the meds and increase time slowly. 4 tramadol down to 2, 8 hours to 12, soaker from 6 hours to 10 and we stopped the duramaxx and nerve pill and so forth.
Hope this helps and good luck with Baby and congrats on making it through the first 2 weeks. We are catching up to you being on day 8.

  3. Great advice! I’ve cut down from 3 – 2 and will start spacing them out a little more. Wow, Boomer – you were on 4? Flying high! My 155 lb girl was on 3. I just can’t wait until she’s OK at zero.
    Thanks for all your help.
