Roger and I have adopted many furbabies in our 35 years of marriage. Baby is a 6 yr. old 155lb English Mastiff who came to us when she was 1 1/2 yrs old along with her 'brother' Toby (a Landseer Newfoundland). We adopted them from Gentle Giants rescue and they are, indeed, both Gentle Giants. Baby was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2012. She just had her surgery on January 27th, 2012 to remove her right rear leg. She is recovering beautifully we are thrilled to have her with us! View all posts by Judy
I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not to see visit her in the hospital. On the one hand, I want to see that she’s OK and cheer her up a bit, on the other hand, she will be so upset when I leave her there. I would love to hear your opinions about this. Better to leave her to mend or visit?
Glad to hear Baby is doing so well! She is so beautiful. I had the same feelings about whether to visit or not. Tasha was in the hospital for two days and the hospital was an hour away. I felt like a HORRIBLE mother but I decided to wait to pick her up rather than go and leave. Knowing Tasha she would have expected to leave with me if I visited. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t visit. She’ll be home recouperating in no time. Wishing you both the best!

Thanks – I’m leaning toward the same decision. I appreciate the reassurance.
We went to see Butch. I did feel terrible leaving, but in hindsight, he was gorked out on Tramadol, I don’t think it affected him much.
Whether you do or don’t visit is fine either way! If you don’t, you can always use the time to “Tripawd Proof” your home =)
Wishing her a speedy recovery!

We left Max in the hospital also, because both John and I were working, and wanted to save the days off for when he came home. We weren’t allowed to visit the day of the surgery, because the dr wanted him to rest. But, we visited him the next 3 days, taking him home on the third day. And yes, it hurts to walk out of there without your dog when they’re watching you go, but I felt a lot better leaving him there when I knew he was being watched and monitored 24/7. It helped me a lot to visit, to see that he was okay and being well cared for.
Dang that’s a hard one. Daisy was only hospitalized overnight so it wasn’t an issue for me. If she had to stay longer I probably would not have visited as I don’t think time means anything to them. I think it is harder on us. If she saw me she would think we were going home.
That is a tough one. Chili Dawg was only hospitalized overnight and we weren’t given an option to visit as his surgery was in the afternoon and we go the phone call that he was out of surgery at 6 pm. If he had to stay longer, we would have visited most definitely.

It’s so hard to make that call, but when it comes to super big dawgs, we find that it works out really well if they can have an extra day or two or three in the vet hospital. It just lets them chill out and relax and begin healing, without a worried human doting all over them.
Hang in there, you’ll have your girl back real soon!
